Medical alcohol has an alcohol content of 75%, the rest is water. Industrial alcohol ethanol has a content of about 95% and also contains about 1-2% water, the rest being other alcohols. Chemically pure ethanol may be 98 to 99 percent. Analytically pure ethanol is usually 99%, and analytically pure is best if there is no water.
Industrial alcohol is methanol and medical alcohol is ethanol.
Industrial alcohol cannot be used to sterilize the human body because methanol can cause poisoning. Industrial alcohol contains about 4% methanol. Criminals use it as cooking alcohol to make fake alcohol. Consumption produces methanol poisoning. The lethal dose of methanol is about 70 milliliters. Methanol is highly toxic and has the greatest effect on the human nervous system and blood system. Ingestion through the digestive tract, respiratory tract or skin produces a toxic reaction. Methanol vapors can damage respiratory mucous membranes and vision. Symptoms of acute poisoning include: headache, nausea, stomach pain, fatigue, blurred vision and even blindness, followed by respiratory distress, eventually leading to paralysis of the respiratory center and death. Chronic toxic reactions include: dizziness, drowsiness, headache, ringing in the ears, loss of energy and digestive disorders. Toxic reactions occur when methanol intake exceeds 4 grams, while a small glass of more than 10 grams of methanol can cause blindness in both eyes and death from excessive intake.
